What is teaching and learning in the 21st century?

Developmental crisis

Erik Erikson proposed that at certain points in a person’s life, there are a number of crises that need to be resolved. I guess I’m finding myself firmly entrenched in Stage 7: Develops interest in guiding the development of the next generation. I’m at the stage in my teaching career where I’m frequently questioning the direction education is going.

I’m fortunate to be in a school division that honours professional development. An outstanding example of this is the training that the teacher-librarians (TLs) are receiving through the LearningPlus model. In this PD, TLs are paired up with a classroom teacher and a Learning Resources Teacher to develop skills in Brain-based teaching and learning, Inquiry learning, critical and creative thinking, and Information Literacy.

This upcoming school year, I’m looking forward to continuing to put my training acquired from LearningPlus into practice. Last year, two colleagues and I studied the effects of differentiating content, product, and environment on our students and ourselves. This year, with the encouragement of administration, our school is looking to expand this model to other students.

Via this blog, my wiki, and continued Blackboard activity, I look forward to documenting my resolution to my development crisis and our school’s path toward increased Information Literacy.

I think that you forgot to mention how accomodating us teachers are to our teacher librarians (even those of us who do not have one in the school).

We treat these librarians as jedi masters who have a lot of knowledge and wisdom but are as slow moving as Yoda himself. That is why they live in the slower speed/pace of the library while us regular classroom teachers function in the high speed/pace of the classroom. dreaming of the day when we can attain the level of a librarian and jedi master.

That is the way of the force!
